SOME IMPORTANT RULES AND REGULATIONS

 
     
  1. REGISTRATION  
 
  • A candidate who accepts the offer of admission shall pay all required fees and shall register at the beginning of each semester for the duration of his/her study.
  • A candidate may request to suspend registration on reasonable grounds. The period of suspension shall not be considered part of the candidate's required duration of study.
  • To request for suspension, a form is available at the Dean's Office.
  • A request for suspension shall be made within the first four weeks of each semester.
  • The period of suspension shall not be less than one semester and not more than two semesters during the candidate's duration of study.
 
  2. PROFICIENCY IN BAHASA MELAYU  
 
  • External (non-Malaysian) candidates are required to complete two courses (totalling four units) in Bahasa Melayu, which will be organised by the University.
  • Exemptions may be awarded for candidates who have undergone similar courses in Bahasa Melayu organised by other organisations which are recognised by the University.
 
 
3. DURATION OF STUDY
 
 

MASTERS BY COURSEWORK

FULL TIME
2 - 4 semesters
PART TIME
4 - 8 semesters

MASTERS BY THESIS

FULL TIME
2 - 6 semesters
PART TIME
3 - 10 semesters

PHD

FULL TIME
6 - 12 semesters
PART TIME
8 - 14 semesters
 
     
 
4. CLASS ATTENDANCE for Masters by Coursework
 
 
  • Candidates are required to attend all the lectures/tutorials/seminars organised as part of the coursework.
  • Attendance rate must not be less than 70%. Failure to meet this basic requirement will result in ineligibility to sit for examinations, and the applicant will be awarded Grade E.
  • Candidates who have registered for a particular course but do not attend the required lectures/tutorials/seminars, and who have not applied to drop the course, will be awarded Grade E for that course.
  • Add courses : first four weeks of the semester
  • Drop courses: Latest by 10th week of the semester
 
  5. THESIS  
 
  • The thesis shall be written in Bahasa Melayu, to be preceded by an abstract, and the translation of the abstract in English.
  • Under certain circumstances (such as when the student is an international student), a thesis may be written in English.
  • Any request to write a thesis in English shall be made to the Faculty for consideration and approval.
  • The writing of the thesis must follow the regulations stipulated in Panduan Penulisan Tesis Gaya UKM (The UKM Style Guide).
 
  6. NEW RULES - MASTERS BY RESEARCH AND PHD PROGRAMMES  
 
  • New candidates of masters by research and PhD programmes who first registered in Semester 1 of Session 2005/2006 will need to satisfy the following additional requirement in order to be awarded the degree:
    1. Masters by research candidate must present at least 1 conference paper and submit 1 paper for publication in a journal during the course of his/her study;
    2. PhD candidate must present at least 2 conference papers and submit 2 papers for publication in a journal during the course of his/her study.
